Admission

How do I apply for regular admission?

Visit https://iit-grad.edu.185r.net/application/login/. Fill it and submit it online. When prompted, select Professional master or master of Science program. You are advised to use online recommendation and Statement of Purpose (professional Statement).

What is a regular applicant?

Regular applicants are those who have complete set of documents at the time of application including GRE score, Transcripts and degree certificate.

What is a non–degree?

The student seeking to do Master’s program but is unable to fulfill documentation requirements before the deadline may be eligible to begin studies as a non-degree student. (Student without GRE or in the Final semester of Bachelor’s program ), may apply for admission as non-degree seeking and take no more than 9 credit Hours (3 courses).

What is a certificate program?

Certificate program forms a subset of Masters and comprises of 3 – 5 courses. One may wish to take up certificate programs and later consider transfer of credits earned to his/her masters. GRE is not required for certificate program.

If I am not interested in a program but want to take individual courses, do I have to apply for admission?

Yes, all distance learning students must apply for admission before they can register for a course. For information, contact any one of the nearest centre.

Registration & Enrollment

How do I register?

If you have received a letter of admission, you may login and register online at myIIT for registration guide click here. For further information contact any one of the nearest centres.

What is myIIT?

New IIT students receive a unique identifier (UID) that is also their IIT email username and login for IIT's networking and computing services. Anytime you need to use resources online that are restricted to IIT members (such as theportal, computer labs and the IIT network, etc...), the system will prompt you for your UID and password. Your UID will remain the same during your entire IIT experience. To access the myIIT portal for the first time, each student must log in using his or her IIT-assigned UID (User ID) for the username and the IIT-assigned password. On subsequent visits to the myIIT portal, you will continue to use your IIT-assigned UID as your username along with a password you create during the process outlined below.

How do I find my UID?

Visit http://myuid.iit.edu/ and fill out the MyUID search form. Your UID will appear in "bold black" text in the Student Results area.

How do I determine myIIT initial password?

Your initial password to access the myIIT portal consists of the two-digit month and two-digit day of your birth date plus the last 4-digits of your CWID number (the ID number you received when you were admitted to IIT). For example, if your birth date is June 8 and the last 4-digits of your CWID are 1234, your initial password would be 06081234. When you log into the portal for the first time, you will be prompted to create a new password.

How to access myIIT portal?

Once you have your UID and password, you can access the myIIT portal. On the myIIT login page, enter your myIIT username and password in the login area on the left side of the screen.

Who do I contact to lift a registration hold?

Determine the type of hold by attempting to register at myiit.edu portal. Holds are imposed for a variety of reasons. Contact us with the details of the hold.

How do I change course registration, change sections, add or drop a course, etc.?

You may add and drop courses online at the MYIIT portal, click on Web for Students. Contact t us if you face difficulty.

How do I find out what courses I must take to complete my program?

For the most up-to-date information, consult your academic advisor. Visit the Graduate Bulletin for complete graduate program descriptions, and be sure to note any updates.

Who do I contact for registration advice?

For advice on the process of registration, contact your Academic advisor or your nearest centre

Who is my advisor?

For non-degree or certificate students, there is no assigned advisor. You may contact the department of your program to ask academic questions. For degree-seeking students, your advisor's name is typed at the bottom of your admission letter. Please contact your advisor with any academic questions.

How long does it take to complete a certificate program?

This depends entirely on the particular program, the availability of courses and the number of credit hours the student enrolls in each semester. Typically, graduate certificate programs require 9-12 credit hours to complete, and are often completed in 1-2 semesters.

How long does it take to complete a masters program?

This depends entirely on the particular program, the availability of courses and the number of credit hours the student enrolls in each semester. Most professional master's degree programs at IIT require 30-32 credit hours. Master's degree programs must be completed within the 12 semesters immediately preceding graduation. Students typically completed their program in 2-3 years.

What academic policies should I be aware of as a graduate student at IIT?

Academic policies are published in the Graduate Bulletin and in the IIT student handbook. It is the responsibility of all graduate students to make sure that all degree requirements set forth by the Graduate College and by their academic department are satisfied. The Graduate College provides guidance and information to students to assist them in complying with course of study requirements. However, the final responsibility to comply with academic regulations and to be familiar with the information contained in the graduate bulletin rests with the student.

How long do I have to finish a degree program?

Master's degree students must complete graduate degree programs within the twelve semesters immediately preceding graduation; Ph.D. students must complete their degrees within 12 semesters of the approval of a program of study. Please see the front section of the Graduate Bulletin for additional details.

Will you accept transfer credit?

For graduate programs, IIT will accept up to nine credit hours of approved coursework completed at another university, provided that the courses were not applied toward a degree. However, for persons holding a master's degree who are entering a Ph.D. program, the master's degree (up to 32 credit hours) may be credited toward the total credit hours required for the Ph.D. Ph.D. candidates transferring from another institution without completing a Ph.D. program at the other institution may transfer up to 48 hours. Does IIT grant credit for work experience?

IIT does not grant academic credit based on work experience. However, some departments may consider work experience in determining whether the applicant has sufficient knowledge to be considered as a candidate for admission without additional course prerequisites. IIT does provide an option for gaining credit by exam. The rules and procedures for this option are outlined in the section of the Graduate Bulletin on academic policies.

If I can't contact my advisor, what can I do?

Contact the academic department to which you have been admitted. Consult the IIT Directory to obtain contact information for your department.

Can I change or request an advisor?

Yes. Simply fill out the change of advisor form.

Programs of Study

How do I fill out a program of study?

Complete the online Program of Study Form (401). 401 forms must be signed by your advisor, department head and the graduate dean, and filed with the office of policies and records in the Office of Academic Affairs, room 110 of the Main Building, Main Campus.

How do I change a program of study?

Changes in programs of study must be approved by your advisor and department chair, and signed by the graduate Dean. Complete the online Change in Program of Study Form (406).

How do I change programs?

You must submit a request in writing to the Graduate College, and an application to the department that offers the program that you would like to enter. A regular student planning to transfer from one degree program to another should discuss the matter with academic advisors in both programs.

How do I officially withdraw from a program?

Students must complete a University Withdrawal or Leave of Absence Form online. This must be approved by the academic advisor, academic unit head and the graduate Dean, and filed with the student services center. International students wishing to withdraw must also contact the International Student Center.

Where do I obtain Graduate College forms?

Forms are available online or from the Office of Academic Affairs, Room 110 of the Main Building, Main Campus.

Deficiency Course

What is a Deficiency course?

Proficency Courses may be required if the student has not taken an equivalent course at the undergraduate level

What are the Deficiency Courses?

Deficiency course/s are CS 201, CS 401 and CS 402

I am awarded a Deficiency Course, what shall I do?

You can do the following:

  • Apply to take the Deficiency exam probably a week or two earlier than commencement of semester. The application will ask the applicant to detail work experience in programming Data Structures and any coursework he/she had taken in Data Structures. Here is a link for the application.
     
  • If the application is approved then IIT will notify us in IIT India to arrange a time to administer the test. By then the student would have paid US $ 100 as exam fee (This fee is only for India section).
     
  • The dept. will then send the exam to us to administer; we will return the Answer books to IIT for grading.

Can I start off with all the three deficiency courses in one Semester?

No. You need to successfully complete CS 201first. Afterwards, you may seek to do CS 401 and CS402 in one semester, though not advised. If CS department permits, You may do; else CS 401 in the second semester and CS 402 in the 3rdSemester , after successful completion of CS 401.

Is there any Pass percentage for this?

Yes. Department declares result as pass or fail.

If I don't score the minimum prescribed score, what next?

If you do not successfully complete the Deficiency examination, you cannot join the program.

Can I do one Deficiency course and One Masters level course, Concurrently?

Yes, provided your background permits you to the master’s level course and credit for such a course is transferable to your program.

I have reasonable Experience in Java. I hold a few Internal Certifications and have done these courses during the process. Should I need to take Deficiency Exams?

Yes. You need to submit papers in proof of your expertise in Java. CS department would vet the papers and decide whether to permit you to write the Deficiency examination. If the Department is not convinced ,you may be advised to join the course rather than writing the Deficiency examination.

Grades

What are IIT's policies on graduate grades?

See the appropriate section of the Graduate Bulletin.

When will I receive my grades?

You should receive your grade report by mail within three weeks after the end of final exam week. You can check your transcript via your secure account at IIT's portal myIIT.

Can I get my grades over the phone?

No.

I am unhappy with my grade, who do I contact?

Contact the course instructor.

What happens if I retake a course?

That depends on why you are retaking it. If you have been required as part of your academic program to retake a course, you will have signed an agreement regarding your expected performance in the course. If you have already earned a grade and credit hours for the course, a retake will not count toward any degree or certificate program nor will it alter your GPA.

Graduation

How do I apply for graduation?

Students who plan to finish all degree requirements must submit an online graduation application by the deadline for the semester of graduation, published on the Academic Calendar. To access the application, go to the Student Records link under the Academics tab in the myIIT portal (detailed instructions). Please note, master’s level students must have earned a minimum of 15 credits, while Ph.D. students must have earned a minimum of 69 credits, in order to access the online application. Once the application is processed, the graduation application fee will be billed to your student account. Graduate certificate students should use the Application for Graduate Certificate (Form 528) to apply for graduation.

When do I apply for graduation?

What if I forget to apply for graduation?

If you fail to apply by the last late application date, you will have to defer your graduation until the following semester AND YOU MUST APPLY BY THE DEADLINE FOR THAT SEMESTER.

When will I receive my diploma?

You will receive your diploma during the commencement ceremony, IF you have met all degree requirements by the published deadlines for the semester in which you applied for graduation, using the Form 527 Graduation Application. If you fail to meet all requirements, you must apply for reconsideration, by filing a new Form 527 Graduation Application, for the next semester. In this case, your diploma will be available for pick-up or mailing, from the Office of the Registrar. The diploma will be published at the end of term, in which all requirements have been met, and at the conclusion of the semester.

How will my diploma be delivered to me?

Your diploma for degrees conferred in the spring may be available for distribution at your academic unit commencement ceremony if all degree requirements have been met by the published semester deadlines listed at Important Dates/Deadlines.

Look for communications from the Office of the Registrar registrar@iit.edu to your @iit.edu email address regarding diploma pick-up for degrees conferred in the fall and summer terms, as well as how to make diploma shipping arrangements for late posted degrees.

How do I obtain official copies of my transcripts from IIT?

Official transcripts may be requested online and a fee of 10$ will be charged. Instructions are also available at that website to order a transcript through the mail or in person.

India Section

What is the difference between the degree awarded to a student at campus and a student in India section?

There is no difference.

Having done my program in India section, I would like to take my Convocation at Campus can this be done?

Yes, upon giving a prior intimation this can be done.

Can part of the program be done in India and other at Campus?

Yes but remember Tuition fee for campus program is different.Please note that you should have submitted your valid GRE score and completed your degree seeking process. additionally, to generate I20 you need to submit finacial support document, passport identity page and transfer form from India to campus

What about Lab?

At Master’s level projects are done using sophisticated software packages using computer. Student would be given access to the required software. Sample for remoting to college server is here

How about the books?

A copy of the Book specified by the teacher is made available to the student in our library. Student may borrow this from our Library. Students are advised to order book with our book store.

How to interact with the teacher?

Students interact with teachers through Conference calls, mail/telephone, chat sessions etc.

Exams & Exam Proctors

Can I redo an exam at a later date?

You cannot change exam schedule without Teacher's permission. If you miss the exams you miss the weight age in FinalGrade.

I am onsite how do I take up my exams?

Identify a proctor i.e. a Senior Executive from HR/PR/Trg whose details have to be relayed to us at least a week before your exams. On the day of exams the Question paper would be faxed /mailed to Proctor with necessary instructions.

Can I get access to specific software to do my Projects?

Yes, If a Specific software is required like Mat lab or pro E, for a project, the licensed full version of the same is made accessible to you.

How do I choose my courses?

You can discuss this with your academic advisor.

Is it in any way dependent to my company?

No, admission is given to the individual based on his/her academic performance etc.

Dates & Deadlines

When does enrollment start?

Registration for fall begins the previous spring in April and continues through the add/drop period. Spring registration begins in November and continues through the add/drop period in January.

When does the semester start?

Fall courses typically begin the second-to-last week in August and Spring courses typically begin the second week in January. Be sure to check the current Academic Calendar for the exact schedule for the year in which you are interested.

When is the last day to drop or add a class?

Consult the most recent enrollment guide and registration calendar for details, including the tuition refund schedule for dropped classes.

When is the last day to withdraw from a class?

Each semester a date is fixed as the last date for official withdrawal without academic penalty. Consult the current semester's calendar for the specific date.

When are midterm exams?

Midterm exams are at the discretion of the instructor. Consult your individual course syllabus for details.

Classes & Instructors

How do I find out which classroom my class is in?

If you are properly registered for courses you can check your registration on myIIT, which will show the classroom your courses are in. If you are an IITV students, contact your site administrator or the IITV client services office. The registrar's office will also email you your class schedule with rooms listed.

How do I get my books?

Review the course syllabus to make sure you have the correct list of required texts. Textbooks may be purchased online or on campus at the IIT Bookstore in the McCormick Tribune Campus Center, 3201 S. State St. Students at the Rice Campus may purchase books at http://www.mbsdirect.net. Distance students should contact Holli Pryor Harris at IITV Client Services, 312.567.3167 for information on ordering and shipping books.

What is the tuition fee for India section?

I intend doing a professional masters, Can I pay for the whole program at one single go?

No, Tuition fee is paid as and when you take a course. Hence typically for professional Master’s program, you would have to pay tuition fee each semester.

Can I get a loan?

Please contact nearest local center for assistance in this regard.

How can I pay the Tuition fee?

Tuition fee can be paid on line, Money/wire transfer or by DD favoring Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago payable at Chicago.There are new instructions for Wire Transfer tuition payments. Please go to Bursar for Payment methods.

When should the tuition fee be paid?

For Fall semester, the tuition fee before the commencement of the classes i.e by mid August. The fee to be paid is determined by the courses/ credits one opts. For Spring the tution fee is payable by mid Jan.

Is there any other fee payable apart from Tution fee?

No, apart from Tution fee students in India section would not be paying anything extra except for Graduation fee paid in the last semester of a student.

What options do I have for paying my tuition?

IIT offers tuition deferral and installment payment plans. If your employer offers a tuition reimbursement plan, you may be able to apply for a deferred payment plan that will allow you to delay payment until you have received reimbursement from your employer. You must submit an application and fee, and a letter from your employer, in order to participate. IIT also offers installment payment plans for full and part-time students. Consult the Bursar's Office website for more information about payment plans.

Is financial aid available?

Yes. Graduate fellowships, teaching assistantships, and graduate assistantships are awarded by departments to a very limited number of highly qualified students at the time of admission. The Graduate College also provides a limited number of partial scholarships for graduate students, based on academic performance as an undergraduate. US citizens and permanent residents may be eligible for federal student loan programs. What is full-time status and how does it affect me?

Full-time status requires registration in at least 9 hours for graduate students. Graduate students are eligible for federal aid and continued deferment of existing loans if they are registered for half-time (4.5 hours) or greater. Graduate students taking less than half-time hours can file for a forbearance to extend their deferment. Continuing graduate students taking one or more hours of 591, 600, 691 or PSYC 599 are automatically forced to special full-time status due to thesis research or Ph.D. candidacy continuation.

International students taking less than full-time hours must apply for full-time equivalency with the International Center at http://www.iit.edu/~internat/forms/LTFT.pdf to remain in compliance with SEVIS requirements. International students who meet the ICenter’s criteria for full-time equivalency are reported as such by the ICenter and do not have their actual student time status adjusted on their academic record.

Does IIT offer career placement and planning services?

The Career Management Center offers resume writing assistance, mock interviews, job fairs and postings and many other career related services to IIT students. The center also provides services to business and industry seeking to recruit IIT students. If you have a job to post, please visit the center's website and follow the links for employers.

How do I get a part-time job?

IIT's Career Management Center maintains an online database of on-campus jobs. International students should be aware that there are strict restrictions on the type of employment they may accept while in the US on a student visa.
